Overview

In the year 2173, Cybertron is going through a period of massive change as Maximal and Predacons replace their older counterparts, the Autobots and Decepticons. Unable to compete with the newer, better Cybertronians and lacking a place on the new peaceful planet, most Autobots and Decepticons quietly leave for distance outposts and colonies. A few however, aren't so willing to fade into oblivion, and are prepared to use any means necessary to take back Cybertron.

Attious Prime, an inexperienced captain on his first mission, and Echoedge, Jargon, Nitrate, Jinx, and Pincushion, his uncooperative crew of military rejects, are sent to investigate the disappearances of Treble, Bass, and Static, a small group of Maximal scientists on a remote moon. When they arrive they find no sign of foul play at the scientists base, but their ship is attacked by Dekatron and his rebel Superions Hardline, Surge, Joule, Pico, and Knicknack, who want to destroy both the Maximal and Predacon governments. The ship is destroyed and the Maximals regroup back at the research base. Attious decides that the only way to discover what happened on the moon is to get control of the Superions' ship, which, if not where the scientists are being held, must have some record of what happened to them. The rest of the crew agrees with his plan, but only because the ship can get them off the planet.

After several skirmishes, the Maximals find the Superions’ ship, the Eclipse, but are outnumbered in the fight as three unknown Superions join in the attack. The Maximals barely escape in one piece, and Echoedge and the rest of the crew come to the conclusion that the three scientist who went missing must have been captured and reprogrammed into Superions. Attious disagrees, reveling that he is an old friend of the scientists and refuses to believe that, even reprogrammed, they could attack him like that. Meanwhile, back at the Eclipse, the three Superions, Limelight, Goldwire, and Feedback, finish their work on a large device in the shadows. Dekatron gives it a trial run and fires it at the Maximals’ base. It knocks the Maximals offline for an extended period of time, during which they relive some of their memories, but then they wake up with no lasting damage. The Superions observe this and Dekatron calls the experiment a failure.

In the aftermath of the attack, the crew is recovering from their injuries and investigating what knocked them offline. Attious, however, is uninterested in doing anything, only staying in his quarters, refusing to talk to anyone as he searches for something to prove that his friends weren't reprogrammed, but everything points to it being true. Echoedge is happy to have him out of the way and takes over leadership of the crew again, but the rest of them visit Attious one by one to try and talk to him. No one is able to help, so they leave him alone. Attious begins to remember more and more about his youth and for the first time regrets abandoning his friends for his career. Finally, he sneaks out of the base to find and talk to his former friends.

Several days pass without word from Attious, and Echoedge still refuses to send out a search party. Attious, meanwhile, continues to search for the scientists. He eventually stumbles into Feedback, who he believes is Treble. She denies it and accidentally mentions a weapon being developed by Dekatron. Before she can say anymore, though, Limelight and Goldwire appear. Then shots come from the trees behind Attious as Echoedge, having finally given in to the rest of the crew, comes with a search and rescue party. The three Superions quickly retreat and the Maximals return to base and Attious tells them about the weapon being developed. For once in complete agreement, they decide to attack the Superion ship and destroy the weapon before it can be finished. Attious still doesn't know what to do about his friends, but realizes that he won't find any answers hiding or searching without direction. If his friends were reprogrammed, then the answers lie in the enemy ship.

A few days later the Maximals make their second attack on the Eclipse. They find several odd things in the ship, such as broadcasting equipment and enough stockpiled weapons to wipe them out, and realize the Superions are serious about destroying the Maximals and Predacons. As they make it to the room where the weapon is, they are discovered by the Superions and are about to be destroyed when an explosion rocks the ship, nearly destroying the weapon and three bots appear from the shadows, opening fire on the Superions. The Maximals, plus the other three make their escape as even more explosions rip through the ship. They stop some distance from the burning ship and Attious realizes the three are the missing scientists and his old friends. Treble, Bass, and Static revel that they were working with three Predacons, Limelight, Goldwire and Feedback, to develop revolutionary communications technology. Such a partnership was illegal for both sides, so when Dekatron came and stole the research, they could only hide as the other three were forced to help the Superions. Attious, as an officer of the Maximal military, is forced to place his friends under arrest for their crimes, as he and the others try and think of a way to get word back to Cybertron of the Superion threat.

Back at the heavily damaged Eclipse, Dekatron is interrogating Limelight and the others. Limelight assures Dekatron that they have only been using the scientists to help in the creation of their weapon, like they told him when they first met. Dekatron is satisfied and orders the crew to use the stockpiled weapons to destroy the Maximal base and show Cybertron that they were serious.

At the base, the Maximals are oblivious to the danger as Attious is torn between loyalties. Treble, Bass, and Static are angry that he had once again chosen career over friendship, and Treble hands Attious a prototype communications device that can send a signal to Cybertron, asking him if he was really willing to turn them in, knowing the severe punishment for their crimes. Attious hesitates, but decides instead to destroy all evidence of their criminal research before signaling Cybertron, even if it means stopping the Superions himself. Surprisingly, the crew, even Echoedge, approves of his decision and agrees to help.

Meanwhile, Dekatron waits alone on the bridge of the ship as the others make preparations to attack. Hardline enters and when asked about the attack, says that there will not be one and proceeds to challenge Dekatron for leadership. They fight, and Hardline loses and flees. Dekatron gloats over his victory before realizing that Hardline has planted a bomb on him. The bomb sets off the weapons on the ship and everything is destroyed. Hardline, along with the others, who left the ship on his orders, see this from their new base and Hardline declares that he is now Lineatron, and the new leader of the Superions. At the Maximal base, they can only watch the flames in the sky and guess at what happened.

Season two - the Maximals struggle against the Superions, who, under Lineatron's leadership, seem to want to prolong the fighting rather destroy the Maximals. More is learned about the nature of the research done by Treble and the others, and how it could be used to destroy everything on Cybertron. The histories of various Superions are reveled, and there is growing evidence that Maximal and Superion alike are caught in a sinister conspiracy.

Characters

Attoius Prime
Allegiance: Maximals
Function: Unit Commander
Quote: “Think fast, look alive, die hard.”
Strength: 8
Intelligence: 7
Speed: 5
Endurance: 6
Rank: 5
Courage: 7
Firepower: 8
Skill: 7

Profile: Fresh from the Maximal Officer's Academy, Attious Prime has plenty of energy and optimism, but little leadership experience. He sees his command of the Freebird as a chance to show everyone he deserves his rank despite his inexperience and is determined to turn the fate of the Freebird around. He is frequently torn between his genuinely kind nature and his sense of duty and justice, which demand he follow the strict and inflexible guidelines of the military. While fairly strong and a good fighter, Attious's background as a civilian scientist often show though in his impulsive actions and his inattention to the dangers around him. He has no real understanding of his responsibilities to his crew beyond what was spelled out for him in the Academy, so it is difficult for the crew to trust in his judgment. His alternative mode is a cruiser, the Cybertronian version of a sports car: extremely fast and impressive, but impractical on a moon that has no roads and few open areas.

Echoedge
Allegiance: Maximals
Function: Terrestial Scouting and Combat, Second in Command
Quote: "If the world were a 'what if' question, there'd be no such thing as IMPULSE! Now do it!"
Strength: 7
Intelligence: 6
Speed: 7
Endurance: 6
Rank: 3
Courage: 8
Firepower: 8
Skill: 9

Profile: Echoedge is the oldest Autobot still on duty, stubbornly refusing to either retire or be reworked as a Maximal. That stubbornness, as well as a casual disregard for orders and an absolute refusal to work with the Predacons, has exiled him to the Freebird. As the oldest and most experienced crewmember, he is often protective of the rest of the crew. In turn, the rest of the crew view him as the unofficial leader and defer to his judgment in most matters. He is hostile to any outsiders he feels are trying to interfere with the crew, and puts his teammates' safety above that of strangers, even other Maximals. While not the strongest, Echoedge is certainly the best and most skilled warrior. In fact, he equals or outclasses Attious in just about every way, a fact neither of them forgets for a moment. He is very friendly to the rest of the crew, treating like younger siblings rather than soldiers in his command. Attious, however, he regards as an idiot who should have never given a command, much less command of the Freebird. His alternative mode is a planetary shuttle, which can fly on a planet and even leave the atmosphere, though it isn't strong enough to break orbit and fly into space.

Nitrate
Allegiance: Maximals
Function: Combat Specialist
Quote: "History is a vast early warning system."
Strength: 9
Intelligence: 4
Speed: 2
Endurance: 9
Rank: 3
Courage: 10
Firepower: 9
Skill: 9

Profile: The second oldest of the crew, as well as Echoedge's oldest friend, Nitrate is a skilled warrior who can't control her violent temper. Having spent most of her life on the front line of one battle or another, Nitrate is too used to battle to live a peaceful life, but too unstable to be placed in any serious military company. She views the crew as her family and, like Echoedge, is protective of them. When not in battle and around the other crewmembers, Nitrate is actually fairly calm and enjoys studying history. The strongest of the crew, Nitrate was built for combat and has many weapons, but her main weapon is her left arm, which is an energon beam cannon. Her thick armor can deflect most attacks and her alternate mode is a tank, which is extremely powerful, but she rarely transforms. Nitrate refuses help from almost everyone, seeing it as a sign of weakness and at times she is protective of the others to the point where she endangers herself needlessly. Physically, she is slowed down because of her armor. She can't use her cannon too often without recharging or she will go off-line.

Jinx
Allegiance: Maximals
Function: Aerial Recon
Quote: “It is easy to be brave from a safe distance.”
Strength: 5
Intelligence: 6
Speed: 8
Endurance: 5
Rank: 2
Courage: 1
Firepower: 6
Skill: 4

Profile: As her name suggests, Jinx's bad luck is legendary, to the point where only the other Freebird crew members will associate with her. Far from being upset by this, Jinx encourages it, feeling the fewer people who encounter her and are harmed by her luck, the better. She is superstitious ( which is highly unusual for a Transformer ) and believes she is cursed, a belief which is reinforced by her role in the accidental death of the last commander of the Freebird. Despite what she believes, Jinx is fairly skilled at her job, as well as being a decent warrior. Her aim, when she isn't convinced she's going to miss, is the best of the crew. She also has the best communications equipment and long range radar. Her alternative mode is a helicopter, which has stronger offensive capabilities but weaker defenses. Jinx is convinced of her bad luck and has no confidence in herself. She frequently makes mistakes only because she expects to make them, and each mistake damages her confidence even more. Her defenses as a helicopter are much weaker than in her robot form.

Jargon
Allegiance: Maximals
Function: Medic and Science Officer
Quote: “Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.”
Strength: 6
Intelligence: 8
Speed: 3
Endurance: 9
Rank: 1
Courage: 5
Firepower: 5
Skill: 8

Profile: Jargon is a talented medic and political radical who was expelled from the Maximal Military Academy for performing illegal experiments. After being denied entrance to every other medical and technological school, as well as being unable to get a job with any respectable company, he joined the crew of the Freebird as a civilian assistant. His beliefs have only grown stronger since his expulsion and he firmly believes that both the Maximal and Predacon governments are corrupt and should be disbanded. His alternative mode is a medical table, which is much like a CAT scan machine and allows Jargon to repair all but the most seriously damaged bots. He can also adjust to analyze unknown devices or samples, as well as do repairs on himself while in robot mode and online, even during a battle. However, Jargon is the least skilled warrior of the group, lacking both weaponry and experience in battle. He is also one of the slowest. When in his alternative mode he is completely unaware of the world around him and has virtually no defenses.

Pincushion
Allegiance: Maximals
Function: Aquatic Scouting and Combat
Quote: "Finders keepers. Losers ... buy from finders."
Strength: 5
Intelligence: 9
Speed: 6
Endurance: 4
Rank: 3
Courage: 3
Firepower: 4
Skill: 7

Profile: An odd name for an odd bot, Pincushion is independent, even for the crew of the Freebird, frequently doing things his own way regardless of what the others are doing. He tends to bounce from one task to another, never staying long enough to finish any one. He is also notorious for his short attention span and his inability to understand the concept of an order. On the other hand, he is also the friendliest of the crew and the only one willing to give Attious a chance at first. His usefulness in battle varies, as he tends to go his own way. More often than not, though, his actions are for the best, even if it doesn't seem so at first. However, his tendency to go off on his own often makes him vulnerable to enemy attacks, and he isn't strong or fast enough to survive in a battle by himself for long. His extreme intelligence would be much more effective if he would stick with one project from start to finish. His alternative mode is a hovercraft, and Pincushion thoroughly enjoys in water in either form, even if he does sink to the bottom in robot mode.

Dekatron
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Leader of the Superions
Quote: “Nobody forgets where he buried the hatchet.”
Strength: 9
Intelligence: 7
Speed: 8
Endurance: 6
Rank: 7
Courage: 8
Firepower: 8
Skill: 7

Profile: Founder and leader of the Superions, Dekatron has one goal in mind: the destruction of the Maximal and Predacon governments and the birth of a new empire true to the old Decpticon beliefs. He is willing to use any means necessary to create his ideal world, but isn't as much as an egomaniacal tyrant as most of the Decpticon leaders of the past. He almost never lashes out at his crew and has a calm, collected personality. However, occasionally frustration and impatience builds up and he makes a major mistake. He depends heavily on Hardline's advice and his role as bad cop to Dekatron's good cop to ensure his crew's loyalty. In battle, he is the best warrior of the Superions, an excellent combination of strength and control. His alternative mode is something he designed himself after forming the Superions and might best be described as an armory on wheels, a vehicle with any number of rocket launchers and cannons, plus enough ammunition to restock his followers. The vehicle, which somewhat resembles a jeep, can also act as one huge cannon, causing massive destruction.

Hardline
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Second in Command and Enforcer
Quote: “Diplomacy is the art of letting someone else get your way.”
Strength: 6
Intelligence: 9
Speed: 5
Endurance: 8
Rank: 6
Courage: 7
Firepower: 6
Skill: 9

Profile: By all appearances Hardline is the perfect second in command. Strong, but not stronger than his leader. Intelligent and capable, but not so much that he couldn't be stopped. Loyal to Dekatron personally, and having no ambition outside the Superions' goals. In fact, he was the one who alerted them to the research being done on the moon. He certainly has his own agenda, but it seems to coincide with that of the Superions. Actually one of the weaker fighters, he more than makes up for it with his contributions off the battlefield, such as turning the scientists' research into a weapon capable of piercing any defense and leveling entire cities. He also acts as Dekatron's enforcer, keeping the crew in line, and is consequently disliked by everyone, even his lieutenant, Surge. His usefulness in battle is further limited by his alternative mode, a sub space communications system, which has no practical value on the moon.

Surge
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Front Line Battle Solider
Quote: "Moderation is a fatal thing … Nothing succeeds like excess."
Strength: 10
Intelligence: 4
Speed: 7
Endurance: 6
Rank: 4
Courage: 9
Firepower: 6
Skill: 6

Profile: Hardline's lieutenant and confidant, Surge is the only one who has any idea of his plans. While not overly intelligent, Surge isn't an idiot. He realises his limitations and the fact that his best chance for advancement, if not survival, lie in allying himself with someone stronger than him. He is loyal to Hardline because he has nothing to gain from betraying him. Still, he gets along with the other much better than his boss, and frequently joins in their complaints. Beside being the strongest of the Superions, Surge also has a good streak of common sense, as well as a patient nature and an understated sense of humor. He also tends to worry a good bit. However, since he follows Dekatron completely, he has no say in his future and in any danger he might be placed in. A mistake on Dekaton's part could be his end as well. His alternative mode is a high voltage power generator. While he can't attack in that form, in his robot for he can send large amounts of energy into his enemies for a short time.

Joule
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Scientist
Quote: "The only prefect science is hindsight."
Strength: 8
Intelligence: 8
Speed: 8
Endurance: 3
Rank: 6
Courage: 5
Firepower: 6
Skill: 7

Profile: Once a Maximal and mid-ranking scientist in a large corporation, Joule was used as a scapegoat when her superiors were accused of several serious crimes. Furious at being used and discarded, she was more than happy to join the Superions. Still bitter over her betrayal, she occasionally shows bits of her former personality, particularly when she teases Surge. In battle Joule is a fast and powerful warrior, but can't maintain the pace for very long. However, when she paces herself, her abilities are much weaker. Off the battlefield Joule's specialty is upgrading and redesigning things and bots. She was the one who created Dekaton's alternative form, even though it went against her artistic sense of style, and modified Surge's form to give him his energy attack. Though fairly high strung, she has gradually mellowed out a little since joining the Superions. Her alternative mode is a concord jet, which is capable of incredibly high speeds, but Joule hates it, saying that it's to ordinary, and wants to design herself a new form.

Pico
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Tracking and Ambush Specialist
Quote: "I don't hold a grudge. I have no surviving enemies ... at all."
Strength: 7
Intelligence: 6
Speed: 5
Endurance: 7
Rank: 3
Courage: 9
Firepower: 7
Skill: 8

Profile: Not truly a Transformer, but a sentient machine built for mining on a planet perpetually in darkness, Pico's only sense is his hearing, which is superior to any radar or detection device on the moon. He joined Dekatron after escaping from the world he was built to work on, and Joule redesigned him to look like a Transformer, though he can't change forms. Though he looks like one, he still lacks the circuitry that would allow him to see, which is what he wants more than anything. Dekatron has promised him that he will be completely changed into a Transformer once he takes power, so Pico follows him loyally. Before coming to the moon, Pico lived vicariously by kidnapping bots and forcing them to describe things to him in perfect detail. He is vain, and particularly enjoys hearing what he looks like, until he tires of the bot. While not massively strong, his hearing allows him to perform ambushes with deadly percision. Though he is loyal to Dekatron, none of the other Superions entirely trust him and take care never to be alone with him, just in case.

Knicknack
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Scavenger and Mechanic
Quote: "Physics, schmisics ... hand me the wrench."
Strength: 5
Intelligence: 9
Speed: 7
Endurance: 6
Rank: 2
Courage: 4
Firepower: 6
Skill: 8

Profile: While Pico is dangerous and violent, but sane, Knicknack is fairly harmless, but completely insane. It occasionally makes him difficult to work around, but usually doesn't make that much difference in his work. He has a gift for fixing anything, even things the more scientific Superions are incapable of. This frequently aggravates Joule. He is also fond of self-experimentation, which is most likely responsible for his insanity as well as his other problems, such as his inability to feel pain or his hatred of being touched. He is fairly useless in battle, seeing as he is rarely there. Knicknack realizes with his poor fighting skills he is little more than a target or a decoy, so he takes pains to avoid fights. His ability to fix anything keeps him from getting into too much trouble about that. His alternative mode is another result of his experimentation. He transforms into hundreds of tiny burrowing machines which are capable of invading any machine or literally removing the ground beneath an enemy's feet.

Limelight
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Visual Interference
Quote: “As long as you’re going to think anyway, think big.”

Feedback
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Audio Interference
Quote: "Ok, I've got some bad news, and some really bad news ..."

Goldwire
Allegiance: Superions
Function: Electronic Interference
Quote: "It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory."

The mysterious trio of Superions who are believed to be the Maximal scientists. They rarely mingle with the other Superions, or are even apart from each other. Limelight is the spokesman, an ambitious dreamer who frequently overlooks the small, but critical details in his plans. Feedback, in contrast, is the nervous, cautious type, with a pessimistic outlook and a tendency to focus on the negative in order to bring her leader back down to earth. The moderating force between them is Goldwire, who tries to keep a healthy balance within the group, though sometimes even his patience is tested by Limelight's half-baked plans and Feedback's constant stream of negativity. Their usual form of attack is to use their abilities to isolate their enemies and pick them off one by one, but they rarely fight, preferring to leave it to some of the more powerful warriors.

Treble
Allegiance: Maximals
Quote: "I never made a mistake in my life; at least, never one that I couldn't explain away afterwards."

Bass
Allegiance: Maximals
Quote: "We're on full tilt for freedom and justice, man!"

Static
Allegiance: Maximals
Quote: "This is the truth. This is my belief ... at least for now."

The trio of scientists who are at the heart of the entire mission, they seem to have some connection with the Superions, as well as knowing Attious in the past. When they were younger, Treble was the uncontested leader of the group, and lead them into adventure with no regard to what might happen, though she often tried to escape the consequences of her actions. Bass, like Treble, was more than happy to break rules in the name of adventure, though he was more responsible than she was when it came to face the music. Attious and Static both followed Trebel's lead as well, though much less vigor. In Attious's case, it was because he was worried about what would happen if they were caught. Static, however, was simply sure that everything would work out eventually, and didn't see the need to exert herself trying to avoid or embrace trouble. Of course, things have certainly changed some since then, especially since Attious left their tight knit group to join the military, something with the other three opposed.
